Hinges

When I was a kid, hinges were simple things. Two flat plates of brass or steel, a pin down the middle, with four or six screw-holes.

Not that they ever had their full complement of screws, and those they did have were always a baffling mixture of flathead and crosshead, but I'm sure that was down to some kind of 1970's carpentry demarcation issue between chippies and their apprentices.

However, sometime over the last few years hinges have become products of the space age. They're multi-levered, brain-twistingly complex pieces of engineering with bits that go in and bits that go out and bits that have to be sunk into precise polygonal dinges in the door and the wall.

You can adjust the horizontal and vertical pitch, the depth of the swing and the way the load is balanced. But should one tiny screw drop out, the door sags on one end and won't shut - just like the old days.

Progress I guess.
